Soil stabilization is a specialized technique used to stabilize the soil for homes and commercial buildings. The process targets the ground area or foundation and involves injecting rods into the underlying soil. Depending on the goal, water or chemical solutions are injected; water is commonly used for soil stabilization, while chemicals may be added to the water injection process to change the make up of the clay soils. The injection is performed using high-pressure steel rods to ensure deep penetration of the liquid into the soil. Upon completion of the injection process, clay soils swell potential should be reduced to a 1% swell or less (or to geotechnical engineers specifications).
Water injection is primarily used to stabilize clay soils. By injecting water into the soil, the particles are encouraged to settle, thereby reducing the swell potential and increasing the density of the soil. This makes the soil more stable and less prone to shifting or settling over time, which can be essential for the structural integrity of buildings, roads, or embankments. Water injection is generally the preferred injection method and is cheaper than chemical injection. However, it's crucial to note that this method is not suitable for all soil types.
Chemical injection, on the other hand, involves injecting chemical solutions into the soils. Chemical injection can offer more targeted results by changing the ionic make up of the clay soils. However, the use of chemicals may be subject to environmental regulations, and the costs are generally higher than water injection.
